Calgary Paramedics Union Cautiously Optimistic

Premier Ed Stelmach is on the same page as Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier. Both want the paramedics to be declared an essential service, preventing them from being able to strike.

Bruce Robb, president of paramedic union, isn’t surprised by the timing. He says it’s no coincidence that this comes when the union is negotiating with the city for a new contract.


Talks between the two began in earnest this past Monday.

Calgary & Its Unions: Here We Go Again

If you thought we’d seen the last of the city versus the union and strike threats, you thought wrong. The transit bus contract issue has been solved but a new dilemma has begun.

The city and the paramedics have gone to mediation in their contract dispute. Paramedics have been working without a contract for the past year. While firefighters and police are prohibited from striking (they are considered essential), paramedics are not. A situation which makes the city unhappy.

Calgary Resident Breaks Pedal Boat Record

Glenmore Reservoir

Calgary is home to the world’s fastest long distance pedal-boater.

Greg Kolodziejzyk broke the record by pedaling his boat a total of 173.76 kilometers around Glenmore Reservoir for 24 hours this past weekend.

“I’m just tired like crazy,” Kolodziejz said. He celebrated his record with a bottle of champagne.

He broke the old record set by John Howard in 2000 by 5 kilometers and pulled up to the dock 15 minutes early.


But this isn’t Kolodziejzyk first record. He also holds the 24 hour land speed record on bicycle which he set in California. Read the rest of this article »
