Black Bear in Calgary

Next time you go for a stroll through Calgary’s South Glenmore Park, be sure to bring along bear repellent. The police along with Fish and Wildlife workers are scouring the park looking for what’s believed to be a black bear.

The bear attempted to attack a couple Thursday afternoon in the park. The woman managed to fend off the bear with a branch. The bear reportedly made three attempts, each was met by the unidentified woman with the branch.

Although no physical contact was made by the bear, ambulance and fire department crews were on scene as well as the police.

Darcy Whiteside, a spokesman for Alberta’s Sustainable Resource Development Department, described the park as

“a natural environment and is actually home to a number of wildlife, including bears. There’s an actual route that bears can go in and out of and typically they don’t become a problem there. They don’t come close to any community or people.”

Whiteside believes the bear has probably already vacated the park. In the meanwhile, the police have asked that Calgary residents please be cautious when visiting the park.

Meanwhile the search is on. Helicopters and boats are joining the ground crews. This bear is believed to be one that has caused problems in the past.

Unfortunately for the bear, officers are not armed with tranquilizers for relocation. Rather this bear will be at the end of his proverbial rope.

What a waste of taxpayer’s money. Police, helicopters and f&w for one harmless bear. Well at least some of the police had to get up and leave The Second Cup for awhile.
