Calgary Going to the Dogs
June 7th, 2007 posted by BMXerAlderman Ric McIver has dogs on the brain. He plans to look at the possibilities of creating a handful of dog parks to help better serve the dog owners and perhaps reduce some of the conflicts between dog owners and non-dog owners.
With over 105,000 dogs in the city, he’s sure to have public support.
McIver cites the need for dog specific parks.
“All our off-leash areas are extremely heavily used and sometimes we run into conflicts — dogs and cyclists don’t always fit well together. Calgarians love their dogs and I just want to see if it’s worth having a category of parks where we could put in amenities for scooping and help avoid conflicts with cyclists and other users.”
Calgary currently has 245 off-leash areas which would remain. Under McIver’s desires, there would be an additional four to six dog specific parks with doggy-guidelines. The dog facilities would offer waste bag dispensers and increased supervision to rule compliance.
According to Bill Bruce, the man in charge of the city’s bylaws, McIver’s nose for timing is right on track. Bruce has been reviewing ways to help improve the existing dog areas.
“There’s a lot of things we can do to reduce that conflict [between dogs and cyclists, etc.], through enforcement or education — we just are looking for what those might be.”
