Calgary Heat Wave
July 15th, 2007 posted by MamasaidSaturday was the hottest day Calgary has seen so far this year. I understand that the thermometer peaked at 30 degrees! But it seemed so much hotter to everyone, especially those who were walking around Stampede Park. The sun beamed off of the pavement making it feel like walking on the surface of the sun.
Calgary EMS, Stuart Brideaux said that the UV rays are the highest between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. He said that this is the hottest part of the day. I am sure that everyone in Stampede Park can agree.
Vendors sold more water than anything else yesterday. They are predicting that over 10,000 bottles of water will be sold. Can you imagine the amount of money people are spending on water? At $2-3 per bottle, this could add up to quite a bit of pocket change.
The EMS is warning people to drink lots of water and stay out of the heat from 10am to 4pm if at all possible. The elderly and young children are especially vulnerable to heat related injuries, like heat stroke.
Signs of a heat stroke include: being disoriented, unconsciousness, acting a bit odd, and no more sweating. Paramedics treated 4 people for heatstroke on Saturday, one of which was taken to the hospital with life threatening conditions.
Since the temperature is still on the rise, paramedics and police urge the citizens of Calgary to play it safe, and stay cool.
According to Environment Canada:
Monday: 60% Chance of showers, high +27
Tuesday: Sunny, high +28
Wednesday: 30% Chance of showers, high +27
Thursday: 60% Chance of showers, high +22
