Calgary Indoor Soccer At Risk
May 28th, 2007 posted by FlamesFanSoccer may be a thing of the past for more than 850 players. The Eastside Soccer Centre is threatened with facing eviction.
They need to raise $200,000 or at least have a plan for raising the funds in place and approved by May 31st – this Thursday. The landlord has asked for long term plans for future years, not just a plan for the remainder of this year.
The indoor facility is home to several athletic associations, and over 80 teams. Among them are the teams for the Calgary Minor Soccer Association and their under-8 teams.
The facility includes 3 indoor soccer fields, a gymnasium used for other sports (everything from lacrosse to basketball to volleyball) and two smaller sized soccer fields for the younger crowd. For the past five years, the facility has been able to stay open. This year, they have been unable to meet the $500,000 annual cost for their lease. They have asked the city of Calgary for help.
If no plan is in place come Thursday, the soccer facility may become a thing of the past. And 850 local kids, from 30 plus different communities, will not have the benefit of playing soccer at a local facility.
For the kids’ sake, something should be able to be done to help out. 850 kids equal at least several hundred parents; that’s enough to have a large voice if everyone can pull together!
