Calgary Residents Should Go For Green
June 4th, 2007 posted by WeekendWarriorIt began before it went National back in 2001. Last year, over 38,000 people participated.
Sunday, June 3rd, marked the beginning of this year’s week long challenge. Commute. Put your shoes on the pedals; take public transportation; or just hitch up your shoe laces and walk.
This kicks off Canada’s Environment Week.
Last year’s results with 38,000 participants equaled the usage of 704 less cars for an entire year.
That’s 887,000 kg of emissions that did not go into the atmosphere. With the talk about the increasing rate of global warming, a week long event may not seem like much. However, there are 211 communities participating. Multiply the numbers out and watch them grow.
“The huge leap shows that interest is expanding,” said Carolyn Bourque, program coordinator for Go for Green. She also mentioned that about 50 percent of participants lived close to their work, within 10 km. “What’s good about that statistic is that single occupancy vehicle drivers have tried (the challenge) out and find alternatives.”
Meanwhile, Go for Green extends the challenge to all. Get your friends. Get your family. Put away the car keys and walk.
Besides helping the atmosphere, you’ll help your pocket book (by not needing to spend as much with the rising costs of gas), and you’ll improve your health.
