Calgary Stampede Auction Reaches Record High of $4 Million
April 21st, 2007 posted by MamasaidThe Stampede chuckwagon committee chairman, Scott Postlewaite, stated about the action,
“Earlier this week, we were questioning whether we could meet last year’s total, but more sponsors started coming to the table and I think there was some team building going on. This, however, is beyond my wildest expectations.”
The drivers actually receive eighty percent of the total sale. The other twenty percent goes toward paying the fees and costs of the sale. Mark Sutherland, son of 10-time Calgary champion Kelly Sutherland, said,
“There’s someone out there with a lot money pushing thing, but, thankfully, there’s been a real commitment between sponsor and driver. That’s the thing that’s driving this sale.”

What do you think of the large amount of money these drivers sold for?

The Stampede is outdated. What is cool about men riding domesticated farm animals?

Maybe Calgary Stampede is outdated, but 4 millions is it not cool?

That 4 million is better spent buying food, medicine, clothing and blankets for the growing homeless population in Calgary. The unfortunate that are out of the public conscience.

I find the Chuckwagon races unconscionable. Every year scores of animals are maimed and destroyed due to the brutal and violent nature of this cruel pastime. The event to be halted. We are not living in the dark ages anymore.

I think that the sport of Chuckwagon racing is finally getting the financial recognition that it deserves. Just the fact that these Drivers give these races horses, whose individual race careers are finished a second chance at life, so they don’t go off to slaughter is great!
Most people criticize the sport without thinking. Race horses who are done their racing career, go to slaughter. Sorry a Race Horse just won’t be any good for your kids to ride on.

Why can’t retired race horses be put in a pasture to live their final days peacefully eating grass? Or if you want to make more money off of them send them to a dog food plant. This would be more humane treatment.
