Congratulations to Amanda Byrne, Caia Morstad, and the
2007 Stampede Queen Amanda Kochan! Kochan, a sophomore at Mount Royal College, is excited to use her role as
Stampede Queen to promote the Western ideals she sees as integral to modern
Calgary. With over 400 personal appearances planned for the 2007 court she will have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate exactly what she means. Filling the cowboy boots of the 2006 Queen, Cheryl Dafoe, won’t be easy, but Kochan sounds like she is ready for the challenge.

April Kanderka and Terri Murray rounded out the 2006 Royal Trio and were also on hand at the Rodeo Royal to hand down their crowns as Princesses to Byrne and Morstad. Calgary’s own Amanda Byrne might look familiar from her time on the National Luge Team.
Has the Stampede Queen Competition become more about the looks and marketing than about the representation of Calgarian values? Is it really any different from other beauty contests? Maybe the 2007 Royal Trio will finally put those questions to rest.

The whole concept of this outdated country fair having a beauty contest just makes me laugh. The Stampede board is merely a front for a Real Estate development company masquerading as a non-profit organization. Using public funds they raze low income neighborhoods to make way for Casinos and drinking establishments. They use alcohol to fuel their profit making venture which highlights grown men in Halloween costumes riding, abusing and torturing domesticated farm animals. Calgary has outgrown this boorish festival of the absurd. A full public investigation should be launched into this unlawful organization.
