Calgary Transit Union Wants to Talk
May 20th, 2007 posted by CanprideAmalgamated Transit Union Local 583 wants to talk to the city council. Members feel that council members haven’t been “fairly informed”.
Mike Mahar, of the transit union, has stated that they will be running more ads, giving the union’s side of the story in an attempt to make sure council is informed, as well as the general public.
Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart claims both sides have been accused of not fully informing anyone.
“I’ve received e-mails from transit union members saying they’re not getting the whole story from their leadership, that they were intimidated at their last meeting by having to use a show of hands rather than a secret ballot,” said Colley-Urquhart. “It’s a responsibility of elected officials to be informed — and we are.”
Colley-Urquhart does commend the union for their letter on Friday asking to continue talks.
The union still contends that the issue of wages and shuttle buses are still to be resolved.
While the union has voted to authorize a strike, Mahar says that there is currently no intention to do so. News that’s sure to be a relief to many.
Hopefully this time around, talks will get somewhere. Neither side wants the potential ramifications a strike and a lockout could bring.
