Climate and Calgarians – Challenges and Efforts
May 8th, 2007 posted by BikiCity authorities now have a 100 year plan for Calgary. The plan is known as The Imagine Calgary report. After 2 years of work, meeting with some 18000 Calgarians and spending $2.3 million, the report was created, about a year ago.
A motion has been taken to the city council by four aldermen. This move was a result of the concern of residents about the shelving of the report. There are hopes that the city council will act on this report and come up with strategies to achieve the goals and targets that were set in the report.
Imagine Calgary is a blueprint. This report sets goals and targets for different dimensions of the city like the environment, social and economical conditions, culture etc. In it there are recordings of Calgarians’ views about Calgary, what they hope for and dream about for our city, and the changes they want to happen etc.
According to the aldermen who are pushing the motion, climatic change is the most pressing attention seeker right now. They are right, as our country’s greenhouse gas emissions are rising. The report has a target of reducing greenhouse emissions by 6 percent by 2012 and around 50 percent by 2036.
Now the question is, Will Calgarians comply with the changing needs and requirements? Will they put forth an effort to make it a success and help in saving their own future?
