Crackdown on Dog Dung in City Parks

April 16th, 2007 posted by Mamasaid

As we all welcome the long-awaited warmth of spring when the ground finally begins to thaw, we head to the Calgary city parks to appreciate the signs of new life.

This photo provided to you by http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Feces_de_can_%28dog%29.jpg As you look for flowers and tree buds, you also need to watch out for disgusting dog feces that accumulated throughout the parks during the cold winter weather. As the ice melts, disgusting dog dung is revealed in pathways, bushes and grass around the parks in Calgary.

These unbagged messes are usually right where you can step in them. Unfortunately, this year’s thaw seems to be revealing more lumpy leftovers than previous years.

Bylaw boss Bill Bruce states that officers will be cracking down negligent on dog owners this May because there have been numerous angry reports about the excessive amounts of dog feces in walking areas. Two officers were hired on a short-term basis to patrol city parks during the spring to monitor pooches’ owners leaving poop behind. Offers are also working to educate the public as well as enforce the bylaws to avoid this unsanitary problem in the future. The fine for failing to pick up dog feces is $250 - having an unleashed dog will get owners a $100 fine.

Because the aging feces is attracting parasites, it is not only unattractive but it has become a health concern for the public. Everyone walking their dog should be aware that it is considerate, sanitary and environmentally friendly to clean up after your dog – and it is also the law.
