Calgary Vs. The Unions: The Fallout Begins

The fallout from the bitter transit union and the city of Calgary is just beginning to hit. Morale for union workers with city contracts is at an all time low.

Union leaders have watched the past goings on with the transit union and it doesn’t bode well. The city is currently or will be negotiating an additional four contracts.


While the firefighters aren’t allowed to strike, they’re been without a contract and the city is set to begin negotiating with the paramedics on Monday. The paramedics are not considered essential to the city; they could call for a strike. (more…)

Bear Attempts Mugging In Calgary Park

Black Bear in Calgary

Next time you go for a stroll through Calgary’s South Glenmore Park, be sure to bring along bear repellent. The police along with Fish and Wildlife workers are scouring the park looking for what’s believed to be a black bear.

The bear attempted to attack a couple Thursday afternoon in the park. The woman managed to fend off the bear with a branch. The bear reportedly made three attempts, each was met by the unidentified woman with the branch.


Although no physical contact was made by the bear, ambulance and fire department crews were on scene as well as the police.

Clean Out Your Closets Now: Calgary May Limit Garbage

If the site of piled high garbage on trash day has your ire, then the city’s direction for trash reduction may be up your alley. Come 2009, Calgary residents are going to have to think twice about their garbage. The city is discussing the idea of limiting the amount of trash and charging residents for their refuse.

“It will enable people who are good recyclers to get a reduction off the amount they pay for garbage,” said Ald. Madeleine King.

She’s in favor of placing a limit on the amount of trash.

Ald. Druh Farrell concurred with the idea of making it “more difficult to discard copious amounts of waste.”
