Graffiti In Calgary: The Art Of Scribbling

From names scrawled in 3D letters with black grease pencils to the more elaborate scenes encompassing every color of the rainbow, graffiti is everywhere. It hides on back alley fences. It lists who was where and when on bathroom stall doors. Occasionally, it increases speed limit signs with over-painted numbers. And sometimes, it’s a stunning display of a truly artistic nature.

The problem, besides the fact that it is plain illegal in Calgary, also lies in the definition. How do you regulate what is art and what is scribble? What makes it art? And what constitutes vandalism?

Perhaps that is one of the reasons why the city is touchy on the subject. (more…)

Climate and Calgarians – Challenges and Efforts

City authorities now have a 100 year plan for Calgary. The plan is known as The Imagine Calgary report. After 2 years of work, meeting with some 18000 Calgarians and spending $2.3 million, the report was created, about a year ago.

A motion has been taken to the city council by four aldermen. This move was a result of the concern of residents about the shelving of the report. There are hopes that the city council will act on this report and come up with strategies to achieve the goals and targets that were set in the report. (more…)

British Airways is the source of Measles Outbreak

Child with Measles

The Calgary patient, a woman put Calgary health authorities on their toes. A woman infected with measles, arrived to Calgary on an April 8 British Airways flight from London. The flight was full and so the danger is large. All the passengers, as many as 224, might have been infected by the germs.

As people came to contact with the infected woman, the chance of its spreading increased. Doctors are on lookout for the disease. Identification of the woman is important so the health authorities can stop the spread. Already more than 200 people have been checked for the disease. (more…)
