Will Calgary Homeless Be Left in the Cold?

This photo provided to you by Andrew Brown http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Homeless-with-sign.jpg Because of the extremely cold temperatures and threat of a huge snowfall last night, the Salvation Army added 100 mats and cots to the 498 beds available at the two centers for homeless people.

Because meteorologist are predicting serious cold and snowfall Maj. Gary Brown, spokesperson for the Salvation Army, stated,

“Our provision of this emergency accommodation is a compassionate response to the cold weather. We want to do everything possible to make sure that people are safe and warm.”

The snow, rain and cold are anticipated to continue through Friday.

Homelessness is a growing problem in according the Calgary’s annual YMCA meeting yesterday. (more…)

City Council Narrowly Approves Curbside Recycling Plan

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

After a four hour debate, the city council decided to back the Calgary curbside recycling plan that was originally going to cost taxpayers $21 a month.

The vote was close and came up 8-7 in favour of beginning a door-to-door recycling that is supposed to begin on January 1, 2009.

After meeting for two days to debate the program, Ald. Madeleine King became the deciding vote to support the idea.

Downtown 6-th Avenue Could Be Closed

Several Calgary’s news medias are talking about a decision made by the city transportation and utilities committee to close a portion of 6th Avenue in downtown Calgary.

The votes were 4 to 3 in favour of closure of the entire block between Centre Street and 1st Street S.E. It is not a final decision yet. The issue was sent to council for approval. However there is a big possibility that it is going to be approved. We will know for sure on Monday.
