As a Calgary transit worker strike looms in our very near future, Mayor Bronconnier is drowning in budget talk. The transit workers’ union was unimpressed with the offer of increases totaling 12% over 36 months. Their message was clear – 15% over 30 months or strike. That wasn’t good news for Bronconnier. Follow that with the provincial budget being announced and the Mayor had serious money troubles.
The Mayor feels the budget doesn’t live up to the promises Stelmach had made particularly regarding the LRT. That can’t make dealing with the transit union any easier. Bronconnier also sees the budget as being unfairly slanted away from the municipal areas. Read the rest of this article »

Once again the Detroit Red Wings crashed the Calgary Flames in Detroit, this time 5:1. Regardless of the score, the Flames played much better than in the first and second quarterfinal game. They showed much more effort, but who cares the Calgary Flames lost and lost big.
There is no surprise that the Red Wings out shot the Flames 38-24. Miikka Kiprusoff made very good saves through traffic, however he could only stop 33 shots.
There were so many turnovers especially in the second period. The Flames allowed 2 short-handed goals. Read the rest of this article »

It seems that the roof was almost blown off the Archie Boyce Pavilion when the 17 annual Calgary Stampede canvas auction was kicked off with a record bid and the sale topped the record with over 4 million bucks bid.
Last year the total bid record was 2.86 million bucks, which was erased by the major amount expended at this year’s auction.

The average bid at this year’s auction was a few cents over $111,208. The first seven drivers auctioned sold for a total of 1.1 million dollars and the 2 million dollar mark was exceeded after the fifteenth driver was purchased.
