Calgary Going to the Dogs

Alderman Ric McIver has dogs on the brain. He plans to look at the possibilities of creating a handful of dog parks to help better serve the dog owners and perhaps reduce some of the conflicts between dog owners and non-dog owners.

Calgary Paramedics Union Cautiously Optimistic

Premier Ed Stelmach is on the same page as Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier. Both want the paramedics to be declared an essential service, preventing them from being able to strike.

Bruce Robb, president of paramedic union, isn’t surprised by the timing. He says it’s no coincidence that this comes when the union is negotiating with the city for a new contract.


Talks between the two began in earnest this past Monday.

Calgary & Its Unions: Here We Go Again

If you thought we’d seen the last of the city versus the union and strike threats, you thought wrong. The transit bus contract issue has been solved but a new dilemma has begun.

The city and the paramedics have gone to mediation in their contract dispute. Paramedics have been working without a contract for the past year. While firefighters and police are prohibited from striking (they are considered essential), paramedics are not. A situation which makes the city unhappy.
