Shakespeare Returns To Calgary

Toronto and Vancouver may have been entertaining with Willie for longer, but Calgary’s just as eager to continue its newer Shakespearean tradition.

Mount Royal College will again be presenting Shakespeare in the Park. This summer’s selections include Macbeth, As You Like It, and the abridged Complete Works Of William Shakespeare.

You can get your outdoor play fix beginning in a few weeks on July 3 at the college and then from July 31 at Prince’s Island Park.

While some of the other cities may have the benefit of more fitting weather, Calgary can claim more stalwart fans of the famed bard. The professional actors and the new college drama graduates attract audiences 1200 strong and greater. Such audiences, thanks to our sometimes strange weather (rather Shakespearean in its own right) can bring lightning storms, mosquito plagues, and hey, toward the end of the play season, that wonderful white stuff.

“And, being Calgary, every year we’ve played in the snow,” declared Martin Fishman, artistic director. “In August, it snows. And we’ll have nights on the island where we’ll have people sitting in the rain watching a show. It’s quite a remarkable experience for everyone.”

But after all, what could be more fitting? Shakespeare began in a park under the mercy of the weather.

So pack your pestilence fighting bug spray, perhaps a rain coat (or more) and get your Willie fix this summer.
