Schooling May Suffer If Strike Occurs

With contract negotiations still up in arms, the transit scene looks like it may grind to a screeching halt. And the school kids may just have a few days off. That is, unless their parents can provide an alternate means of transporting them.
“Parents need to ensure their kids are fully aware of what potentially could go on and are clear on what their next steps are if a strike occurs,”
said Tania Younker. Younker is the Calgary Catholic School District spokeswoman.
Carpooling with other parents is the most recommended solutions.
Although the one bright spot in all this: should the strike be voted to take place, parents should have the rest of the week to make their plans.
An estimated 10,000 students would be affected by a transit strike. Official are looking at the possibility of having the regular carriers double their routes.
“The last time Calgary Transit went on strike, we worked with our regular carriers to do some double routes,”
said Barb Kuester, a spokeswoman for CBE.
“We will be meeting with Southland and Cardinal this Wednesday to determine if it is even possible to do this again.”
Of course double routes for yellow buses may mean shifting the start times in the schools to accomodate the arrival times, Keuster cautioned.
School board websites are offering up to date information on the strike and bussing plans. Parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s school website.
So while 10,000 parents are struggling and worrying, not to mention the 2400 union workers involved with the transit contract dispute, how about all the other employees of various local businesses that would not have a way to work?
Are there any alternatives being planned for just in case for everyone else?
