What Next? Calgary Trash Police?
June 13th, 2007 posted by CanprideGot garbage? Get it out to the curb before the bag limit is imposed. Calgary will be drafting a plan referred to as “tag a bag” limit for trash.
On top of the coming recycling program (scheduled for 2009), residents may have to deal with limits to other garbage. Those who recycle more and have less trash wouldn’t have to worry about the bag limit; those with loads of trash would have to pay. While the intent of the plan is to encourage the recycling, the end result remains to be seen.
Ald. Druh Farrell wants Calgarians to meet the example that other cities have already set regarding limits of refuse sent to dumps.
“I think it’s time we start expecting more from Calgarians,” Farrel said. “Just about every city in the world has bag limits.”
Well, perhaps Canadian cities, but not worldwide.
The city’s rather ambitious goal is to reduce the amount of household garbage to 20% of the quantity going to landfills compared to the amount recycled by the year 2020. Currently recycling only amounts to about 20% compared to that sent to the dumps.
Ald. Ric McIver is in support of the plan but would rather it be implemented sooner.
“If council and the administration all agreed that they wanted to have a bag limit program in place, I think within 30 days it could be up and running smoothly and Calgarians would be largely happy with it.”
In the meanwhile, it may be a good time to clean out all of those closets, your attic, the garage, and when was the last time you went through what you had in the basement?
